Unlawful Affair With Asher Williams

Chapter 34

Cynthia POV

'You need to do something with your life, Cynthia. We can't be together' anger surges through me, and I feel my heart hurt so badly as I watch him walk toward the entrance door. Tears well up in my eyes as his words keep hitting me so hard. It has been years since he said those words to me, but they still feel as though they have just been said to me.

Pushing all the thoughts to the back of my mind, I sigh briefly before I proceed toward the entrance door, and I head to the elevator as soon as I walk inside the lobby.

The elevator is quite crowded, but thankfully that I made it to it on time. The elevator rolls open minutes later, and everyone strides out of it.

"Cynthia..." The familiar voice brings me to an abrupt halt, and I squint my eyes confusingly. Wait a minute, have I been in the same elevator with Alex? How come I didn't see him inside? I turn to face him, regardless. He's still as handsome as always, and everything about him is still perfect, but not as perfect as my Asher. Why the hell am I even comparing them?

"Alex... You're here?" Although it's hard to smile at him, but I still try so hard not to let the pain take the best of me. There's no way I would allow that, never!

"Yes, I just got here. What are you doing here?" He asks after he looks around.

"Oh, this is where I work," I reply to him, feeling a sense of pride in my words, because why not? This same bastard mocked and left me because I had nothing to do, he left because he felt that I would be useless in my life, so it's only right that I feel confident around him, right?

"Wow! What a coincidence. I'm friends with Raymond," He says to me with a nervous smile on his face, and just that disgusts me so much. How dare he smile at me? How does he still bring himself to smile at me after everything he has done? If I were him, I wouldn't have the nerve to even stand in front of me. Do I blame him? I guess he doesn't know what shame feels like.

"That's good. Excuse me," I reply to him sarcastically, ready to go.

"Uhm... Hold on. Uhm... I know you're at work now, I was thinking if we can hang out together and talk about something," He says to me, and I stop to look at him.

"Talk? I don't think I will have the time, Alex," I reply to him sarcastically, and he slowly nods his head.

"If there's nothing else, then I will take my leave now," I tuck my hair behind my ear, ready to leave when his voice stops me again. What the hell does this bastard want from me this morning? The traffic jam almost ruined my day if not that Nathan came through for me, and now this bastard? Can my day ever get better?

"Uhm... Is it fine if I talk to your boss to give you a day for it?" He asks, and I sigh briefly. Is this guy losing his mind now or something?

"No, it's not. I have a date with my boyfriend. Excuse me," I reply to him sarcastically before I walk away from him, heading to my office. As I walk through the hallway, I can't help but feel this sense of fulfillment, because why not? Maybe I would've been hiding by now if I hadn't done anything good with my life, but here I am today, boastful of the life I'm living.

"You look stunning,"

"You look beautiful, Cynthia," My colleagues compliment me as soon as I step into the large office, and I blush hard. "Thank you," I reply to them.

"Oh my goodness! You needed to have seen Cynthia with her boyfriend yesterday. I was so jealous of her. The guy is just so perfect," Zara, one of my colleagues and the extrovert in the office whines as she cups her cheeks in her palms. "Really? Cynthia has a boyfriend?" Others murmur as they hurry over to her seat to get the full gist, and I feel so elated. Now, I know how good it feels for ones man to be the talk of everyone. Asher is unarguably cute.

"Yes, she has a boyfriend. The man is just so cute," Zara whines for the second time, and I roll my eyes as I finally turn my desktop on, ready for the day's work.

"Tell me about it," I hear another voice behind me, and I sigh briefly.

"I heard he's Adelie's elder brother. The guy is just so cute," Zara says for the umpteenth time, and I finally slam my hands on the desk to call them to order. I'm getting jealous already. Why would she be talking about my man like that? It's annoying.

The sound of my phone beeping pulls my attention, and I check the screen to see a text on the screen. It's from Adelie.

'Let's see briefly by lunchtime' I read the message, before I reply to her, and just when I'm about to drop the phone, it beeps again with another text popping on the screen, but this time it's from Asher. 'Hey, pretty. Let's have dinner together tonight. I will pick you up after work' I blush hard after I read the text.

'Alright, handsome. I will be waiting for you' I reply to him before I drop the phone, and concentrate on my work again.

It's finally lunchtime, and I leave my office to go meet Adelie at the cafeteria where I know she must be waiting for me already. The young lady doesn't joke with food, so I'm sure she must be there already. Arriving at the canteen later, I spot her sitting there and already having her lunch like a hungry tigress, and I shake my head before I walk over to her.

"Hey, sweetie. Did you not eat before you left for the office this morning?" I ask her as I pull out the chair and sit on it.

"No, I didn't. I'm so famished," She says after she gulps down some water.

"What about you, aren't you going to eat anything?" She asks me, and I shake my head. I rarely have lunch, since I eat two times daily. Morning and night. I only have lunch when I'm so famished, and now, I'm not. "No, I'm not hungry," I reply to her, and she nods her head.

"What was the stunt you pulled at the party yesterday?" She asks after she cleans her mouth with the napkin, focusing all of her attention on me.

"What stunt?" I ask her, even though I know what she's talking about.

"Why did you bring Asher to the party?" She asks, and I scoff.

"Come on, Adelie. You're not serious, are you? Asher is my boyfriend, and it's only right that I..."

"You can't date Asher, Cynthia. Can't you get it? I know you love him, but you have to be careful around him," Again, she says the weird things that leave me questioning myself about what exactly is happening. "Why are you against my relationship with your brother? You were the one that was helping me out then, why..."

"You won't understand, Cynthia. Asher is..." She stops and sighs deeply as she runs her fingers through her hair. What exactly is she hiding from me?

"Am I not good enough for your brother? Does she have a girlfriend already? Why are you against my relationship with him? This is getting out of hand, and I need to know what exactly is going on. What is happening?" I ask frustratingly, and she sighs briefly.

"It's nothing. You just have to be careful around him. Don't love him with all your heart," She says to me before she stands up and strides out of the canteen without sparing me another glance. What is going on?
