Jamie couldn't bear to leave so easily. "I'm not leaving. Don't try to push me away."
Ben stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his silhouette obscured by the interplay of light and shadow. His expression was unreadable but carried an unexpected gentleness. "Charlie will be out of school soon. If he doesn't see you, he'll get anxious." Jamie felt as though she had been struck silent. Reluctantly, she left after ensuring Ben's assistant promised to keep an eye on him. Only then did she reluctantly head out to pick Charlie up.

"Uncle Ben is tied up with something right now. He'll probably come by later. Can you wait for a little while longer, Charlie?"
Lately, Ben had been a constant presence, joining Jamie to pick Charlie up from school and often staying for dinner. Charlie had grown used to his company.
Still, Charlie was a considerate child. Though he looked disappointed, he didn't throw a tantrum and quietly waited. Jamie wished he would act out instead. His quiet patience tugged at her heart.
Thankfully, Ben did show up later that evening. Perhaps he didn't want to let Charlie down. When he arrived, his usual calm demeanor was back in place. "Sorry I'm late, Charlie. Look what I brought for you."
Charlie lit up and rushed over to grab the snacks Ben held out, his earlier disappointment replaced with joy. The atmosphere turned lively again.

Ben broke the silence. "I've thought about it. If I can't be a lawyer anymore, I'll stay with Lucas Corporation. Besides, you're here too."
Jamie was caught off guard, her heart skipping a beat. "Is it because of me?"
She had considered many reasons why Ben might give up his career as a lawyer, but she had never imagined it would be for her.

"You can't do that," she said, shaken.
"I can, and I will," Ben replied firmly. It was clear this decision wasn't made lightly or on a whim. He had thought it through.
The warm light softened his usual
aloofness as he spoke, each word deliberate and sincere. "I told you, I'm willing to do anything for you f abandoning my beliefs is inevitable, then stepping back and staying by your side is the best choice can make."

Jamie sat frozen, her heart pounding
in her chest like it might burst free. She pressed a hand to her chest, willing herself to stay calm, but she couldn't. Ben's earnestness replayed in her mind, over and over.
Before she could say anything, a small, sleepy voice broke the moment. "Mom, Uncle Ben, what are you talking about? I can't sleep..."
Jamie quickly stood. "I'll go check on Charlie."
She left hurriedly, almost fleeing the room.
Ben watched her retreat, her flustered demeanor softening the intensity in his gaze. He sat quietly for a long time after.
As promised, Ben followed through with his decision. Ignoring the ongoing rumors, he publicly announced his resignation as a lawyer, declaring his full commitment to Lucas Corporation. The statement caused an uproar, sparking heated discussions everywhere.
