Chapter 925
Chapter 925 Elias and Ashley's Side Story: Number 1
The doctor paused briefly before responding, "Medically, a pregnancy where the woman is over 35 is considered an advanced maternal age. Statistics show that as women age, they face more risks during pregnancy.
"For example, there's an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities. Conditions like gestational diabetes or hypertension become more common too. But not every woman will experience these issues-it varies from person to person."
Elias tensed up. "So, what are the chances of having no complications at all?"
The doctor replied, "Not very high."
They could still try for a child, but it would likely take a toll on Ashley's body.
As they left the hospital, Elias said without hesitation, "We're not having a baby."
Ashley furrowed her brows. "Why? I thought I couldn't get pregnant anymore, but now, the doctor that you'd brought in said that I can. Isn't that good news?"
"Bullshit! I'm not letting you put your body at risk for a child we don't even know yet. What kind of idiot would agree to something like that?"
A fierce glint flickered across Elias' eyes, and Ashley stared at him with a blank expression.
Elias stood firm, and neither of them surrendered for three minutes. Eventually, Ashley turned on her heel and walked away. However, Elias didn't follow her.
Before, Elias had never shown anger toward Ashley, and he had always accommodated her. But now, regardless of whether she spoke calmly or threatened him with sharp words, Elias wouldn't yield.
Elias was even prepared to give up their physical intimacy. Every night, he wore long-sleeved pajamas to bed, as if he were a monk sworn to celibacy.
But that night, Ashley narrowed her eyes and playfully reached out to touch his chest.
Elias immediately sat up and scooted away from her.
"You need to behave yourself! Keep this up, and I'll go sleep in the guest room," he scolded lightly.
A hint of amusement flashed in Ashley's eyes as she nonchalantly tossed her hair behind her shoulder. She never wore a bra to bed. So, as her nightgown's strap slipped off her shoulder, a smooth expanse of pale skin was revealed.
"Oh? Where did you say you were going to sleep?"
Elias felt an immediate response.
How could she tease him like that?
Although Elias was frustrated, he stood his ground and refused Ashley's seduction. He rolled out of bed and marched straight into the bathroom to take a cold shower.
Ashley was left speechless.
The next day, Ashley sent Elias a shopping link on WhatsApp. Thinking that she wanted him to buy something for her, Elias opened the link, only to be completely stunned.
It was a chastity belt for men.
Elias stared at the screen, at a loss for words.
Nevertheless, he spent a full ten seconds seriously considering the order. In the end, he closed the site, realizing how insane the idea was. He then sent Ashley a sad face emoji in return.
And so began the quietest month they had ever had to endure ever since getting married.
Elias somehow managed to hold out for an entire month, even though it felt like pure torture for him.
Meanwhile, Ashley seemed to be thriving. Her work was going well, and she visited the adorable Wilhelmina as usual.
Emelie introduced Ashley to a doctor, and Ashley had gone for several checkups. Although she seemed satisfied with the results, she refused to tell Elias what the visits were for.
Since the doctor was Emelie's contact, Elias couldn't get any answers from her either. Elias could only make guesses. But the more he thought about it, the more he was convinced that Ashley hadn't let go of the idea of having a child.
Elias was both angry and irritated. Ashley had never been so obsessed with anything before-not even him. One day, Elias caught a glimpse of Ashley's computer screen. It was left open on a page about IVF. Alarm bells went off in his mind, and he instantly suspected that Ashley was planning to go through with it.
Elias stayed calm and considered his next move. Finally, he decided to first learn more about the process. After all, he had to understand how the procedure works. Hence, he sought a doctor who could explain it all.
Elias' face grew darker as the doctor explained the surgery. By the time the doctor pulled out a needle nearly 12 inches long, Elias was in full-blown shock.
Did the doctor say they were going to use that to retrieve the fertilized eggs from the uterus?
Elias froze for a brief moment. Finally, he regained his composure.
"You're telling me that this thing will go into my wife's uterus to get the eggs?"
"Yes," the doctor replied.
Although Elias was only there for information, he couldn't contain his anger.
"Are you trying to kill her?"
The doctor quickly tried to calm Elias down. "Mr. Undvike, there's no need to be upset. This is a standard procedure. The safety and health of the patient is our top priority."
Despite that, how could Elias stay calm?
He winced at the thought of even a small needle piercing Ashley, let alone something that size.
Was Ashley so desperate for a child that she'd lost all sense of reason? How could she even consider putting herself through that?
Elias got into his car and drove straight to her law firm without hesitation.
The moment he arrived, he stormed in, his emotions boiling over.
"Ashley!" he shouted.
Ashley frowned at Elias' outburst in the office.
"Have you lost your mind?" she asked.
"If you even think about doing that IVF procedure, Ashley, I will lose it right here!"
Elias was so infuriated that he could feel his heart aching.
"Can't you think about me for once? Why are you being so selfish? Have you ever considered that I might not be able to accept this?
"Is having a child really that important to you? The baby doesn't even exist, but you already love it more than me!" Ashley watched as Elias spoke. His eyes were red with frustration and anger, and he looked like a lost, abandoned dog.
She crossed her hands and said, "Before anything else, tell me this. Why don't you want a child?"
Elias exploded in anger. "Are you seriously asking me that? Why don't you try seeing things from my perspective? After the accident, you were in a coma for three years.
"I had to watch you lie there motionless and slowly wasting away. It was hell for me! I would've traded places with
you if I could!
"And now, you want me to risk your health again for the sake of a child? I can't do that!"
Her well-being was all that mattered to him.
After a long pause, Ashley finally replied, "I've actually already decided that I don't want a child."
Elias didn't believe her. "Liar! You were researching IVF,"
"I looked into it because I took on a case related to it recently. Ever since our first visit to the hospital, when the
doctor explained the risks, I've decided that I don't want kids."
Ashley looked Elias in the eye as she emphasized each word.
Elias was still skeptical. "But... why?"
Ashley rose from her seat and walked over to him.
"The doctor said that pregnancies at my age are risky. Even if I delivered the baby safely, the strain would still take
years off my life. Elias, I'm a few years older than you.
"Chances are that I'll leave this world before you do. I don't want to make that happen any sooner. I want more
time with you."
Elias was stunned, left speechless by her words.
He had always been tough, rarely shedding any tears, except for the time when Ashley had gotten hurt. However, her words brought him to tears, and he pulled her into a tight embrace.
"Honey..."
Ashley's heart was heavy with mixed emotions. She wrapped her arms around him, feeling the warmth flooding
her.
She knew how much Elias treasured her, and she felt the same toward him.
