The CEO's Empathy Pregnancy Pains

Chapter 12 The Joy of Reunion

Emily tried to push down the bitterness in her heart and closed her eyes, feeling exhausted. She figured she'd be up all night since she'd slept so much during the day, but she ended up drifting off anyway. Even in her sleep, her dreams were a mess. One minute she was seeing Isabella jumping off a building, the next her grandparents were in a car crash, and then Michael was finding out she was pregnant and demanding an abortion. In short, she didn't sleep well at all.

Emily woke up super early, only to get a call from Michael's mom at the old mansion, reminding her about the family dinner tomorrow night. Usually, his mom would tell her first, and then she'd pass the message to Michael. The Smith Corporation was the biggest family in Emerald City, with a huge and complicated family tree. To this day, Emily still hadn't met all the relatives, only remembering a few key ones.

The Smith Family's monthly dinner was a tradition that never changed. No matter who you were or where you were, you had to show up at the end of each month.

In the past, Michael's grandpa, Mason Smith, hosted the dinners. But since Michael took over the company last year, he'd been in charge, and as his wife, Emily had a lot on her plate and couldn't afford to mess up. Michael knew she had a hard time with his family but never stepped in. Thinking about the past dinners where his mom gave her a hard time, he never stepped in.

If it weren't for Mason looking out for her, she might've already lost it. She knew Mason was the only one in the Smith Family who truly cared for her, so after getting the call from his mom, Emily felt really uneasy. This was one of those things she wanted to avoid but couldn't.

After the call, while thinking about how to tell Michael, the door to the hospital room opened, and doctors came in for their rounds.

Emily put down her phone and looked up, surprised to see the lead doctor.

"Daniel Wilson?" Emily blurted out, shocked.

Daniel was really handsome, with an air of elegance. The white coat he wore made him look refined and almost monk-like.NôvelDrama.Org owns this text.

"Emily?" Daniel seemed just as surprised to see her on his first day of rounds. He walked over, looking concerned.

He glanced at her medical chart and frowned a bit. "Are you pregnant?" Daniel asked, then turned to talk to the other doctors, telling them to continue their rounds while he stayed behind. The room quickly emptied, leaving just the two of them.

"Daniel, the kid isn't yours. No need to be so shocked," Emily said, genuinely happy to see him, as it meant there was hope for Isabella to wake up. "You're still in the mood to joke with me. I already heard from Abigail that Michael wants a divorce, right?" Daniel pulled up a chair and sat down.

Emily smiled faintly. "Daniel, let's not talk about such depressing stuff. When did you get back? Why didn't you tell me?" Emily didn't want to discuss the divorce right now.

Daniel seemed to get that she didn't want to go there and didn't push it. He sighed and smiled gently, then said, "I just got back yesterday. I was planning to contact you today, but you surprised me instead."

Emily chuckled at his words. "You surprised me too. So, now that you're back, is there any chance my mom might wake up?" Her mom had tried to kill herself by jumping off a building a few years ago, but instead of dying, she ended up in a

coma.

Back then, Hayden was trying to force her to sell herself to some old guy as a mistress. She refused and ran away from the Brown Family, but Hayden cut off her mom's medical expenses, trying to force her hand.

Daniel reassured her, "Don't worry, I'll do everything I can. I'll keep a close watch on Isabella's condition and let you know if there's any change." With Daniel's promise, she felt a bit more at ease.

Her mom was brain-dead, kept alive only by advanced medical equipment. Stopping the medical expenses would mean giving up on Isabella's life, but she refused to give up.

She stubbornly believed that Isabella would wake up one day. She wanted Isabella to see the downfall of those two bastards with her own eyes. She didn't believe that the Taylor Family's sudden collapse in Silverlight City and her grandparents' car accident were unrelated to those two scoundrels, but she had no proof yet.

At her most desperate moment, she had turned to Michael. Maybe she didn't want to sell herself to those disgusting old men, so she chose someone she liked instead.

But to her surprise, Michael didn't want her. Instead, he bought three years of marriage from her, which was a pleasant surprise at the time.

'Which girl wouldn't want to marry someone she liked since her youth?' But now, she regretted her decision.

"Emily, I'm sorry. If I hadn't gone abroad back then, you wouldn't have... You wouldn't have married him, and you wouldn't have suffered so much." Daniel looked at Emily, who was still so beautiful but now frail and heartbroken, with eyes that had lost their initial sparkle.

He had cherished Emily in his heart, and he thought they had plenty of time. When he learned about her and her mom's accident and rushed back, it was already too late. He could only watch helplessly as she became someone else's wife, silently protecting her from afar.

"Daniel, what are you talking about? I've never blamed you." Emily tilted her head and smiled playfully. 'How could I blame him? It wasn't his fault.' she thought.

Daniel quickly pulled himself together. He had thought about letting her go, knowing she was struggling, but seeing the clarity and trust in her eyes, he couldn't bring himself to say it. "I know you're generous. Alright, I need to continue my rounds. I saw your report; you can be discharged today." Daniel said, standing up and ruffling her hair.

"What are you doing?"Michael's voice came through, when the door to the room was suddenly pushed open, hitting the wall with a loud bang.

Michael stormed in, looking furious, and yanked Daniel away. Emily hadn't expected Michael to show up at this moment, looking as if he had caught them in the act.

"What are you doing? Michael, let go of Daniel." Emily was a bit annoyed. She got out of bed and separated Daniel and Michael.

Michael glared at Daniel and sneered. "Daniel? If I hadn't come, you two would be hugging by now, right?"

Seeing Emily smile at Daniel from outside the door, Michael was livid. She had never smiled at him like that.
