Chapter 291
Lucas' expression was dark, his sharp gaze seemingly piercing through everything.
The moment Celine and Yvette saw him, they visibly froze, and their arrogance instantly subdued.
Lucas walked to my side and patted my shoulder lightly, signaling me to calm down. Then, he turned to Celine and said in an icy tone, "Celine, you deliberately provoked Madam Burke, causing her to have an episode and lash out. I think you know exactly what you were doing."
Celine's expression changed. Though clearly lacking confidence, she still insisted, "I... I didn't... I was just..."
"Just what?" Lucas pressed forward. "Just trying to scam for compensation?"
Sensing the situation was turning against them, Yvette quickly stepped in. "Even if my mom said something, Madam Burke was the one who got violent first! The injury is real! If you don't pay up, we'll make a scene!"
Lucas glanced at her and said calmly, "I'll pay for the medical expenses."
I looked at him gratefully and whispered, "Thank you. I'll pay you back... though
I'm surprised you're actually willing to compensate them."
Lucas gave a slight smile. "No need to thank me."
Then, he turned to Celine and Yvette and said, "Now, please leave."
The two of them didn't dare say anything else and left the hospital ward one after the other.
I let out a long breath, suddenly feeling exhausted.
Helping Mom lie back down on the bed, I gently stroked her hair.
Lucas came to my side and asked softly, "Are you okay?"
I shook my head while holding back my tears. "I'm fine. It's just... My mom is like this, and I'm really worried about her."
He was silent for a moment before saying, "I know it's hard, but you need to stay strong. I'll help you." As he spoke, he reached out and gently held my hand.
I instinctively pulled my hand back. I felt the lingering warmth of his palm on my fingertips, leaving me slightly uneasy.
Lucas didn't seem to mind my reaction. He simply smiled faintly and said, "I've paid the medical expenses. So, how do you plan to repay me for this favor?"
I was momentarily stunned before realizing what he meant.
He had helped me several times before, and I had never gotten the chance to return the favor. Now, I owed him medical fees on top of that. It would be a lie to say didn't feet any pressure. '
"What do you want me to do?" I met his gaze head-on, unwilling to avoid the issue.
Lucas' smile faded, his tone turning serious. "Come work for me. I happen to need an assistant."
My first instinct was to refuse.
Although his company offered great benefits, I didn't want to owe him too much—
let alone have people think I got in through personal connections.noveldrama
Besides, with Mom's current condition, I couldn't focus on work.
Glancing at Mom, who was still lying on the bed in a daze, I sighed. "This isn't the place to talk."
Lucas nodded and followed me out of the ward.
At the end of the hallway, by the window, took a deep breath and said, "I work for you, but my salary and benefits must be the same as any other employee. I don't want special treatment." '
Then, I sincerely thanked him again. "Thank you for today."
Lucas chuckled. "No need to be so formal. The company offers employee housing, and it's close to the office. If you move in with your mom, you'll save a lot of time and energy."
What do you think?
