Chapter 110: Glorious History
The signing went off without a hitch, nothing special to report.
The next morning, Luke showed up at the training base and kicked off the long, grueling physical exam process. This wasn't just the usual rookie camp check-up; the team needed a full-on physical to make sure he was in top shape. The drug test alone had both urine and blood samples. Then there were injury checks and athletic skill tests, covering over a dozen different things.
It took more than four and a half hours before they finally called it a break.
After grabbing some lunch, Luke got a tour of the whole training base, thanks to the staff. He checked out the gym, the indoor training field, and the locker room, getting a feel for the place. The highlight, or maybe the lowlight depending on how you look at it, was the Hall of Honor tour.
The staff went on and on about the San Francisco 49ers' long history and glorious past, clearly trying to make the players feel proud and connected to the team.
Just like in other sports, player transfers are pretty common in football. But the quarterback spot is a bit different. The really good or super reliable quarterbacks might stick with one team their whole career. Out of the current top four quarterbacks, only Drew Brees has played for more than one team.
No matter what the future holds, for at least the next two years, Luke is all in with the San Francisco 49ers.
Honestly, the staff didn't need to go on and on. Everyone knows the San Francisco 49ers, based in the northern Bay Area of California, are one of the most successful and legendary teams in the league's history.noveldrama
In the NFL, there are two conferences: the AFC and the NFC. Each conference has four divisions: East, West, North, and South, with four teams in each division. San Francisco is in the NFC West, along with the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, and St. Louis Rams.
This year, Forbes ranked the Dallas Cowboys as the most valuable sports club, followed by the New York Yankees, then Real Madrid, Manchester United, and FC Barcelona. The San Francisco 49ers came in ninth on that list.
Oh, and by the way, no basketball teams made it into the top ten.
As of 2011, the Pittsburgh Steelers are sitting pretty at the top with six Super Bowl wiris, maRhiny uttermitterinosi successirearminttenéague: Kiyrh Jerhiruttern, uttera Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys each have five Super Bowl wins, tying them for second place. The Green Bay Packers follow with four Super Bowl victories.
For any player, joining the San Francisco 49ers is a huge honor!
But, all that glory is in the past. The last time the 49ers won a Super Bowl was way back in 1994.
Since the turn of the millennium, the team missed the playoffs for eight straight years. Even worse, in those eight years, they only managed an even record of eight wins and eight losses once. The other seven years were losing seasons, plunging the team into its darkest, most chaotic period ever.
This once-great team, home to legends like Steve Young, Joe Montana, and Jerry Rice -names that shine even in the Hall of Fame is now desperately looking for a savior to lead them out of the darkness and back into the light.
People had high hopes for Alex Smith once, but that didn't pan out. This year, folks aren't expecting much from Colin Kaepernick, but they can't help but hope. Can he pull the 49ers out of the abyss?
For an undrafted rookie, especially an undrafted quarterback, joining the San Francisco 49ers is a dream come true. This is one of the most coveted teams in the league and also one of the greatest. Plus, the team is in a rebuilding phase, giving rookie quarterbacks more trust and opportunities.
And let's not forget, San Francisco is home for Luke. What could be more perfect? Maybe aiming for the starting position is a bit ambitious, but that's Luke's next goal.
As usual, Luke's work for the day was done. Now, he just had to wait for the physical exam report. Until he officially signed, the team couldn't show him the playbook or let him join internal training. Legally, Luke wasn't a team member yet. With a free afternoon ahead, Luke could take a drive around and enjoy a rare break.
But with preseason just around the corner, the team didn't have much time to waste.
After the tour, Luke went back to training. Not on the main players' regular field, but on the adjacent open training field.
Quarterback coach Geep Chryst was the first to show up on the training field, along with a fitness trainer, nutritionist, and other staff. They started with some basic tests, checking out Luke's technical moves and physical stats. Over the next few days, they'd come up with a specialized training plan to help Luke level up.
At first, it all seemed super professional, but honestly, the basic training was pretty much the same old stuff. The initial excitement and newness quickly faded into a routine, and it felt like nothing had changed-no signing, no selection, no big deal. He was still just an undrafted rookie busting his butt in a trial.
The expected thrill and novelty ended up being just regular training.
On the third morning, Luke headed back to the team building. Jonas showed up again, and together they went over the key points of the contract. After Luke confirmed everything, he signed his name, and it was a done deal.
Then, Geep popped up at the office door, knocked, and asked, "All set?" When he got the nod, he looked at Luke and said, "Luke, come with me to the tactical meeting room next door." Not giving Luke a second to breathe, he waved him over, "Hurry up, we don't have much time to waste."
Luke grabbed his copy of the contract, didn't even have time to shove it into his backpack, and hurried after him.
Walking quickly down the hallway, Geep lowered his voice and said, "Technically, we should do introductions first and then meet the other guys in the locker room. But we're behind schedule, always behind, and we don't have time."
Luke had just signed, the ink barely dry, and he was already in pro player mode. Rookies like Logan and Marcus had spent three months getting used to the mindset of a pro player, the training rhythm of a pro team, and the daily grind of the league. But not Luke, not even for a minute.
Entering the tactical meeting room, this was where the magic happened and wonders were planned before every game.

On the far left, a big projection screen hung on the white wall, perfect for reviewing game footage. On the far right, a whiteboard stood against the wall, covered in black marker scribbles-tactical terms and breakdown diagrams. In the center were rows and rows of chairs.
"Here." Geep's voice snapped Luke back to reality, interrupting his inspection. He noticed a thick stack of documents on the table to Geep's right, piled high, taller than two hands stacked together. "This is the playbook."
The legendary playbook. In college, there weren't that many plays, maybe not even a thousand. But in the pros, they said there could be up to twenty thousand plays. The team would mix and match them based on the coach's style and the players' skills. A quarterback had to memorize and use at least thousands of these plays.
Today, Luke finally laid eyes on a professional team's playbook.
He thought he was ready for it, but when he actually saw it, his mouth dropped open a bit. "It's thicker than the Oxford Dictionary," he muttered, remembering Marcus's joke and breaking into a smile.
Geep didn't get the joke but just nodded. "Next, you need to read through the entire playbook, understand it, use it, and ideally, have your own thoughts and insights..." He paused. Colin had been going through the playbook for nearly three months and still had no insights. Realizing this might be too much to ask, Geep softened his tone, "If you have any questions, feel free to ask, discuss with teammates, discuss with coaches, it's all welcome."
Geep patted the playbook gently. "This isn't an easy task, but with less than five weeks until the regular season opener, we need to speed things up. Do your best, and if you can't keep up, the whole team will help." Then, a thought struck him. "Look at me, Wonderlic Personnel Test perfect score, the last thing you need is my worry, right?" Luke chuckled and joked, "The pressure is on. If I had known, I would have intentionally missed one question." His confident and relaxed demeanor made Geep laugh too. Luke opened the playbook. The first few pages were the training plans for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with detailed schedules down to every ten or fifteen minutes. Then came the actual tactics, with diagrams at the top showing player formations and movement methods, and annotations below.
Each tactical note was super detailed, with at least a dozen or twenty explanatory options, all clearly laid out.
The uniqueness of being a professional quarterback started to sink in.
