'What is it?' Timothy picked up the phial.

'The latest product from Paragon's pharmaceutical arm. Avery got it for me from the lab. It's not on the market

yet.'

'Alcohol dehydrogenase,' Timothy read off the label. 'What does it do?'

'It's the same stuff found in our liver that helps to break alcohol into ketones. This will speed up the rate of

detoxification.'

'Ooh. This will be handy at parties.' Bianca scooted closer. 'When does it come out in the market? I want a

boatload of this.'

'Soon, I think,' Darya said. 'Avery has the details on distribution. I'll ask him later.' Avery insisted on her taking this once he knew she was going to be drinking.noveldrama

He would have come with her if he wasn't held back by work.

It was Darya's first time taking the antidote, but she had complete faith in her brother.

Winfred rose to his feet. 'Shall we make a move?'

They climbed into the roomy SUV.

Harley signed contentedly when she kicked off her heels and her bare feet touched the lambs-wool floor mat. 'I wish I had a brother like yours.'

She grabbed a quick shower and got changed.

Thanks to Avery's magic potion, she was clear-headed and not showing any signs of a hangover at all.

Avery and Matthias were sitting at the dining table when she went downstairs.

'Morning, princess. Matthias set down his newspaper.

'Morning, Dad.' Darya pecked her father on the cheek.

'Morning, Dolly. Avery pulled out a chair for her.

'Morning, Chief.' Darya sat down and poured herself a cup of coffee. There's enough food to feed a football team. I should've asked Bianca to stay over last night.'

'Billinger asked the cook to prepare the breakfast especially for you,' Avery said. 'He says you've lost weight.'

'Remind me to thank Uncle Bill later.'

Darya was spoiled for choice-fluffy buttermilk pancakes with fat dewy strawberries on top, avocado smash, eggs in a spicy shakshuka, Belgian coconut waffles, French toast with parmesan crumbed eggs and spinach

soufflé.

All were her favourites.

Back in the Cavanaugh household, she was usually the one doing all the cooking.

She picked up a fresh strawberry and bit into it.

'I heard about the run-in you had with that Ryan boy from the Mendez family.' Matthias held out a bottle of

sourwood honey.

'Thanks, Dad.' Darya took it and drowned her pancakes in the saccharine syrup. 'It wasn't a big deal.'

It made Avery's teeth ache just looking at it. 'You might as well just forget the pancakes and drink the honey

from the bottle.'

Darya made a face at her brother. 'Did you tell on me?'

Avery shrugged. "There were plenty of people at The Hideout. News of your bet

with Ryan was making the rounds before we left the club.'

'He asked for it.'

Matthias nodded. 'I'll speak to Eugene Mendez if you would like me to.'

'Nah. I took care of it.' Darya tapped her phone. 'Ryan's not going to be a problem anymore. Not when I have, ahem, certain photos of him."

Micah could wield his clout and ask the other partiers at The Hideout to delete the photos of Ryan stripped down to his white boxers, but Darya still kept her copy.

"That's my girl.' Matthias tousled Darya's hair.

He'd taught his children to keep out of trouble.

But if trouble came knocking, they must stand up for themselves.

'Go straight for the jugular,' Matthias used to say. 'When you strike out, make sure your enemy stays down.

Don't give them the chance to come back.'

After breakfast, Matthias went off to meet his golf buddies while Avery and Darya drove to work.

Sharon Hoyles sauntered into the vice president's office half an hour later.

She tossed a thin file onto Darya's desk. 'Sorry I was late. Here's the amended proposal you asked for.'

Darya picked up the file that was supposed to be submitted yesterday.

'I reiterate,' Sharon said without being asked, 'it's better for us to pick Kemp Industries over Solaro. You may be the project leader, but we are the ones in the trenches. I've been studying the industry reports. Working with Solaro is going to put a huge strain on our financial resources.'

'I'll take your concern into consideration.' Darya didn't look up.

'Fine. Suit yourself. Sharon remained standing. 'I just want it on record that I'm officially opposed to the Solaro

project.'

'Duly noted.' Darya knitted her brows as she flipped through the documents. 'What the hell is this?'

She was pointing to the second page after the executive summary.

The proposal's title was changed to 'Kemp Industries.'

'I asked you to change the bid price offered to Solaro, not change the company

we are working with.'

Sharon shrugged. 'Like I told you, going with Kemp is the right call.'

'It's not your call to make. You've overstepped the bounds.'

Sharon sighed and adopted a more conciliatory tone. 'Look, I know you are new

on the job, and you are just trying to prove yourself. But it's not the right-'
