Chapter 1605
Mrs. Lucas couldn't help but think back to how she had once treated Jamie. Now, to lower herself and ask for Jamie's help felt humiliating, even to her. She couldn't help but feel that what she was doing was utterly inappropriate. Jamie poured her a glass of water and handed it to her with a calm smile. "Mrs. Lucas, please take your time."novelbin
Mrs. Lucas stared into Jamie's eyes, noticing the calmness and sincerity there. She hesitated for a moment before finally taking the glass.
After a long pause, she spoke hesitantly, "I want to apologize for how I treated you before. I was wrong. I shouldn't have done that. And now, having to come to you like this, even I find it hard to look at myself."
"You don't need to say that, Mrs. Lucas," Jamie replied gently.
"Jamie, I want to ask for your help to talk to Ben," Mrs. Lucas said, taking a deep breath before continuing.
She slowly began explaining what had happened over the past few days. Ever since Ben had walked out that day, he hadn't spoken a word to them. He had even driven out all the people his father had placed at Lucas Corporation.
"His father is furious and not in good health. Last night, he worked himself into such a rage that he ended up in the hospital. He's still lying in a hospital bed," Mrs. Lucas said with a sigh.
Jamie's eyes widened in shock. She hadn't expected things to escalate to the point where Mr. Lucas would fall ill from anger.
"How is Mr. Lucas now?" Jamie asked with concern.
"He's stable for now, but I want Ben to come and see him," Mrs. Lucas said, looking at Jamie with a pleading expression.
Jamie could understand her dilemma. When a father and son were at odds, the person caught in the middle, especially the mother, would always be in the most difficult position. She couldn't take sides, but she also couldn't just stand by and do nothing. However, Jamie felt that she shouldn't interfere.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Lucas. I can help you with other things, but this is something Ben needs to decide for himself," Jamie said softly, lowering her voice.
She tried putting herself in Ben's shoes. If it were her, would she be able to forgive Mr. Lucas?
She couldn't find the answer. And because of that, she couldn't make the decision for Ben either.
Mrs. Lucas looked slightly disappointed, but she had expected this outcome and accepted it with a quiet nod. "I won't take Charlie back with me. He's spent enough time with me these past two days. Let him stay with you for now. I'll come to visit him again soon." Charlie came running out of the room, his big, curious eyes looking up at Mrs. Lucas. "Grandma, are you leaving?"
"Yes, Charlie. Are you going to miss Grandma?"
"Of course I'll miss Grandma! Can't you stay a little longer?" he asked with a hopeful smile.
Mrs. Lucas chuckled and ruffled his hair. "I'll come back to see you soon, okay? Be a good boy and listen to your mom."
Charlie reluctantly let go after hearing her reassurance and waved her goodbye.
Jamie walked Mrs. Lucas to the elevator. Before stepping inside, Mrs. Lucas turned to Jamie and said, "It's clear to me that Ben cares deeply for you. He always has, even back then. And now, even more so."
"I know," Jamie replied softly.
"Are you still upset about how I treated you before? That was my fault, but don't hold it against him," Mrs. Lucas said sincerely.
Jamie hesitated before answering. "It's not about that."
Mrs. Lucas studied her face for a long moment, then sighed and left without saying anything further.
That evening, Ben stopped by. As soon as he stepped through the door, he asked, "Did my mom come by earlier?"
Jamie didn't try to hide it. "She did."
She had expected him to press her for details and had already prepared how she would respond, but he didn't ask anything further.
But now, Jamie's curiosity was
piqued. Thinking about Mrs. Lucas's
request, she glanced at Ben's calm expression and carefully probed, "What do you think about your father?"
Ben saw through her immediately. "Did someone ask you to bring this up?"
"No..." Jamie said with an awkward laugh.
Well, that didn't go as planned.
Ben adjusted his watch, his tone flat
and his expression unreadable. "Once finish this project, I'll leave Lucas Corporation. Whatever
happens after that is no longer my concern."
