Chapter 2597
“You’re quite perceptive,” Nathan teased.
Lucinda laughed Lightly.
“You changed into a different color.
It’s not like I’m blind.”
Nathan was speechless for a moment.
Why was it so difficult for her to just acknowledge that she had been paying attention to him?
Undeterred, he smiled and reached for a cabbage she had been eyeing, adding it to her basket.
“Lucinda, do you recall what I mentioned last night about having our marriage certificate?” Nathan began.
“Yeah, and?” she replied.
He explained, “The certificate is safely stored in the wardrobe drawer back at home, and I keep the key with me.
It’s a tricky drawer to find, and it houses other vital documents as well.
I can’t just let anyone access it.
Could you perhaps accompany me to see the proof you’ve been wanting?”
Lucinda scoffed in response, “Why do you all resort to the same script? Just a few days ago, Kyson was pulling the same stunt, insisting I go with him.
When I refused, he ended up standing in the courtyard all night.”
Nathan’s face stiffened.
Exhaling deeply, Lucinda continued with sincerity, “I can’t recall much, and all of you are strangers to me.
If it weren’t for Kyson, I wouldn’t even know my own name was Lucinda Simmons.
But I’m not naive.
I don’t have a phone or anything to confirm who I am.
This place is isolated.
How did you even find it? Who told you where I was?”
She emphasized the last question, her tone heavy with implication.
Nathan’s brows knitted together as he grasped the full weight of her suspicions.
She believed someone had been covertly observing her, leaking her whereabouts to others.
“I need to investigate this,” he resolved.novelbin
“It’s too risky here, surrounded by forests that offer perfect hiding spots for the wrong sort.
My first priority is to get you to safety.”
He could only turn his attention to Cory, who was stirring up trouble behind the scenes, once he knew she was out of harm’s way.
Lucinda, resolute and shaking her head, declared, “I’m not leaving, and if I must, Hilda comes with me.
She has to—”
Bang!
Her words were cut off by the startling blast of a sniper rifle resonating across the field.
“Get down!”
Nathan reacted instantly, pulling Lucinda to the ground and rolling with her across the field.
A stray bullet grazed his arm, ripping through his gray overcoat and staining it with blood.
Lucinda gazed at his wound in alarm.
“You’re hurt.”
Caught in the urgency, she brushed aside any hesitation or embarrassment from being close to a stranger.
Her eyes focused solely on the blood seeping from his arm.
Nathan, however, was more concerned with pinpointing where the shot had originated.
He glanced at her briefly and reassured her with a smile, “It’s just a scratch, nothing serious.”
