"So, I think..."I pause. Not because I don't know what I want to say. But because the silence in this damn room feels like trying to breathe in a fucking grave.

All eyes. Every damn pair of ancient Alpha eyes locked on me like I just stripped naked and danced on the table.

No one talks. Not even Enoch.

Good. Go ahead, underestimate me.

Let me set this shit straight.

"I think," I say louder this time, chin lifted, "if you're trying to sell this whole 'Unity of the Species' crap to the public, maybe stop planning it like a retirement fundraiser for washed-up alphas."

A low chuckle breaks from someone in the back. Another Alpha snorts. One actually nods, arms crossed over his massive chest like he's impressed.noveldrama

Others, however...

Yeah, they're seething.

That guy from earlier the dick with the white beard and overcompensating leather vest-leans forward like he's about to pounce.

"You think you can speak like that in front of a council?" he snaps. "You're just "

"Just what?" I shoot back. "Say it. An Omega? A girl? An outsider? Whatever little insult you're choking on, spit it out, grandpa."

His eyes narrow. The vein on his temple throbs so hard I half expect it to explode and do us all a favor.

"I've planned events that saved lives. Fundraisers that actually raised funds. Ceremonies that didn't look like they were designed by a blind elder wolf with a Pinterest account," I say, arms crossed.

"You want the people to believe in your so-called unity? Then show them something new. Show them progress. Not another sad-ass ballroom dinner with crystal nameplates and stale pastries."

My voice echoes.

The tension could slice skin.

White-beard Alpha's mouth opens again like he's about to double down on his own stupidity, and I brace for it-ready to fire back with a smile and another verbal grenade. But I don't have to.

A low, gravelly sound rips through the room.

A warning.

A dangerous growl that rattles the room. Coming from the King's chair. Those forest green eyes turns icy as they run through the no-balls old men at the table.

"Say one more thing and see what happens, Goffman." Enoch trails off, and a shiver runs down my spine.

Everyone immediately shuts up. Including White-beard. Goddamn right you should be scared of him. When has a monster

You cannot play games in the presence of Enoch Blackwell. Do not ever think you're even capable of that.

My heart hiccups as I stare at my mate. At those forest green gaze I adore.

Enoch... Oh, Enoch. I don't want to beg. I know you can feel it. The longing, the aching, my need for love. I don't want ot beg, but Goddess-oh Goddess, please. Please make him love me again.

He's still leaning back in that throne-like chair, forest green eyes fixed on the idiot who tried to put me in my place. But the dangerous calm in his expression is sharper than claws.

The bastard growled for me.

And holy shit, I wanna kiss him for it.

Calm down, Taryn! Instead, I smirk. "Any other critiques? Or do I get the floor now?"

No one speaks.

Councilman Lionel finally clears his throat. "Miss Sinclair. You've been heard. Can committee by next week?"

"Make it three days," I say. "Unless you're scared I'll outshine your decorator."

A few coughs cover more laughter.

Meeting adjourned.

I stand up, legs steady now even though my heart's still hammering like a war

drum. Enoch's watching me again, his gaze trailing me like a threat and a promise all at once. But he doesn't say anything.

He doesn't even blink when I brush past him. Oh come on. Come closer, baby. Play with my chaos.

Let me be your sickening desire. "Do you have any plans after this?" I smile, inching closer.

"No," He drops.

"How about tomorrow then?" I bite my lips.

He doesn't say anything as I move closer to him. Ugh, Goddess, help me.

Fine. Okay then.

Let him simmer in his own silent, broody mess. He defended me back there. I think that's enough-for now.

We step out of the council chamber and into the car. Enoch gets in first. I follow,

the door slamming shut behind me with a satisfying click.

Silence.

I cross my legs and look out the window, like I'm not completely aware of his body

heat bleeding into my side of the seat.

And then-

"You did great back there."

My head snaps toward him.

Is that... praise?

"You okay? Did you just... compliment me? Do I need to check if you're running a

fever or did some fairy godmother finally pull that steel rod out of your ass?"

His jaw clenches and I relish at the thought of getting to him. “Taryn."

God, the way he says my name. It's sharp. Impatient. I may be delusional about

this, but it's though he wants to fuck me or kill me-maybe both. Fuck, I'd still want

that.

I'd let this man ruin me in many ways than one. Ever since I found him in the

woods, he saved e there. Right in that woods.

Enoch saved me in every way a person can be saved,

I grin. "What? I'm just saying. I'm shocked. The King speaks now, and it's nice?" I pretend to act shock, putting my hand on my chest and letting my jaw drop.

He rolls his eyes, but I catch the tiniest twitch in his lip. It's as if he's biting back a smile.

Let's start a little trouble now, shall we? I lean in a little, close enough to feel the heat radiating off his neck. Ilet my lips brush his collar, inhaling his musky scent. Even his scent is manly. How in the world is that possible?

"You liked it, didn't you?" I say softly-seductively. Fall for it, Blackwell. I know you're obsessed with me as much I am. Maybe more.

He sits stiffly, not saying anything.

I breathe in closer, I could feel our heat entangling itself. "Me standing up there.

Putting those assholes in their place. You loved it, didn't you?"

I sound like a whore. But for him, I would. I fucking would.

He doesn't answer my question.

But he doesn't move either.

I lean closer, testing the edge.

My lips graze his cheek-just enough to make him feel it. You will never be done

with me, baby. You're mine. Only mine.

One. Two. Three seconds.

I pull back, feeling my pulse in my throat.

Holy shit, did I just do that?

His

eyes

flash to mine. Those godly squared jaw clenched tight. His lips formed into a hard

line.

But he doesn't growl-no, he doesn't.

He doesn't snap either, now shove me away.

Damn, I think we're really making some progress here.

I didn't think I would get a plus points impressing the council like that in front of

him.

I bite my lip, feeling giddy. “Didn't think so,” I murmur with a cocky smirk, leaning back into my seat.

The driver clears his throat. Loudly if I may say so. He's definitely getting awkward. "Apologies, Your Majesty. I just got a call

from Beta Jacob while you were inside. He said someone's waiting for Miss

Sinclair at the palace."

"What do you mean someone?" I ask, leaning over in between the driver's and the

passenger seat. The old man looks down at me and scratches his head.

"Who is it?" Enoch growls, annoyed.

Oh come on, we were making some progress!

Damn it, whoever you are.

But who is it now?
