Chapter 640
Calliope grabbed Yvette's wrist, her fingers cool and sure. In her other hand, she balanced an iced latte, sipping through the straw as she checked Yvette's pulse with practiced ease.
After a moment, Calliope looked up, a raised brow betraying her surprise. "Well, you're in pretty good shape, huh? You got pregnant this fast? It's definitely a bun in the oven. Is it really Gideon's, though?"
One sentence, and Fleur's attention snapped to Yvette. Her eyes narrowed, sharp as knives.
After all, her son's legs weren't fully healed yet. Everyone knew that. Who could say for sure if Yvette was really carrying Gideon's baby? She remembered all too well how Yvette had flirted with Silas. If she could seduce Silas, who's to say she hadn't been with someone else, too?
Fleur regarded Yvette with a cautious, almost predatory suspicion.
Yvette's face went pale, and she shot Calliope a furious glare before rushing to explain, “Mom, it's not what you think! I've only been with Gideon, I swear. If you don't believe me, just ask him! There's nobody else, I promise!"noveldrama
She sounded desperate, pleading with Fleur to believe her.
God, Calliope's big mouth was going to get her killed one of these days. If she hadn't said anything, Fleur probably wouldn't have started doubting her.
But Fleur knew Yvette all too well. She'd never really believed Yvette loved Gideon. It had always been about money and social climbing with her. If someone wealthier or more powerful came along, Yvette would drop Gideon in a heartbeat. But right now, she didn't have any better options.
Everyone in the Baker family group chat knew what kind of girl Yvette was. There was no way she'd get access to anyone higher up the food chain. She was stuck with them, and she knew it.
"So, she's really pregnant?" Fleur asked Calliope, her voice a mix of excitement and uncertainty. She wanted to believe it, but couldn't help worrying that Calliope might be wrong.
Last time, there'd been so much hope, only for it to end in heartbreak. This time, she needed Yvette to take care of herself and that baby, no matter what.
Calliope just shrugged. "Yep, she's pregnant, alright. But you might want to get a proper check-up at the hospital, just to be sure."
She took another sip of her latte,
then added, "But listen, her health's a
little iffy. She might be pregnant
now, but there's no guarantee she'll
carry to term. It could get
complicated."
She wasn't sugarcoating it. Yvette had always had issues. Getting pregnant hadn't been easy, and staying pregnant might be even
harder Miscarriage was a real
possibility. And if things went really wrong, well... let's just say the baby might not come out perfectly healthy, either. Genetics could be tricky.
"Are you cursing my grandchild now?" Fleur snapped, her patience running out.
Calliope rolled her eyes. "I'm not cursing anyone. I'm just giving you a heads up. If
I wanted to curse your family, I'd do it behind your back, not right here in front of you."
She looked away, already bored with the conversation.
Just then, Portia and Mavis came around the corner, and Calliope excused herself, heading off to join them.
Fleur turned to Yvette. "Well, if that's what she says, we'd better go to the hospital and make sure. We'll get some real answers there."
Yvette nodded, a flicker of hope in her eyes. Maybe, just maybe, this baby would change things for her. she could bring Gideon a son, surely Fleur and the rest of the Bakers would treat her better. And Eamon'd have to care about the baby, too.
Without another word, Fleur and Yvette headed out, making their way to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Calliope caught up with Portia and Mavis, and the three of them chattered happily as they strolled off together, planning to catch a movie at the theater downtown.
What do you think?
